Description

Jacobo and María Angeles are from the village of San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca.  This village is famous for its wood carvers and Jacobo and María’s workshop has received the highest national and international recognition; it was used by Pixar to base the movie Coco.  They concentrate their carvings around the Zapotec figures of “Tonos” or “Nahuales” known worldwide as “Alebrijes.”  Each piece is elaborately decorated using “Mixteca-Zapotec” iconography. They also focus on educating young people in their intricate techniques and the symbolism of their ancestors.
